KEEPINGS SENIORS SAFE IN SUMMERS Summers can be an enjoyable weather for seniors where they can let their guards down and indulge in outdoor activities that can be relaxing for them. It is the best weather to enjoy a day at the beach or a picnic at the park with friends. While getting some essential vitamin D from the sun is important, with seniors there are always some risks involved. Keeping in mind their independence and their safety, here are some tips to keep in check before they leave home! Skin Care – Sun is without doubt the best natural source of vitamin D, but exposure to sun can take a toll on their skin. With age, their skin has become thin and delicate and sunburn is a cause of concern. When going outdoors, they should always use a sunscreen having at least 30 SPF or higher to prevent sunburns and heat marks. Comfortable Clothing – Summers mean wearing as less clothes as possible and yet keeping safe from suntans and sunburns, but feeling at ease and comfortable. ...

Diabetes Testing At Home - Curodoc Healthcare

 DIABETES TESTING AT HOME

Diabetes requires you to regularly check blood glucose level as an essential part of your care plan. Testing your levels at home allows you to keep a check on the levels and you learn to manage your sugar levels more conveniently.

Normal blood glucose ranges between 70 and 140 mg/dL.

Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) is below 70 mg/dL.

High blood sugar (hyperglycemia) is above 140 mg/dL.

Throughout the day, your blood sugar levels vary depending on what you eat and your medication dosage. The most ideal is to maintain glucose in the normal range.

Diabetes complications that can arise from very high or very low levels:

  • Diabetic Coma
  • Eye Disease
  • Gum Disease
  • Kidney Damage
  • Nerve Damage

Blood glucose testing at home is handy and there are a lot affordable machines. Most home testing machines have a lancet and lancet pen, test strips, a glucose meter, and a carry case.

Steps for testing at home:

  • Wash your hands.
  • Place a lancet into the pen.
  • Place a new test strip into the meter.
  • Prick your finger using the lancet pen.
  • Place a drop of blood onto the test strip area.
  • Results will be shown.
  • Do not reuse the lancet and strip again.

The most ideal time to test:

Morning fasting: This provides the baseline level and also can specify the whole process during the day.

Before a meal: Blood sugar levels before meals should be in the low to normal range, so a high reading at this time might suggest difficulty in managing blood sugar.

After a meal: Post-meal testing gives a good idea about how your body reacts to food and how effectively sugar reaches the cells. The recommend testing is for about 2 hours after a meal.

Other ways to test for diabetes includes fasting tests, oral glucose tolerance tests, HbA1c tests, or a combination of all or some of these.
