CARGIVING AND COMPLICATIONS OF SUMMER WEATHER
Changes in weather is a challenging time for all senior adults. Our seniors react differently to hot weather and are more susceptible to dehydration and heat-related conditions such as disorientation, tan, loss of appetite etc. There is also an increased risk of COVID related illness, as the world is opening up and restrictions are being lifted. Therefore it is important to take precautions and keep them extra safe during the summer. Here are some tips to keep our beloved seniors happy, healthy, active, and safe this summer.
1. COVID-19 PRECAUTIONS
Continue practicing COVID-19 precautions even if everything opens up and all is going well. Use a mask when outdoors, wash and sanitize your hands regularly, maintain social distance and do not venture outside unless necessary, and the last but not the least, get medical attention or home healthcare services if required.
2. HYDRATE
Dehydration can lead to complication such as heat exhaustion, it is particularly common among older adults. A caregiver can help keep a keen eye and play an important role in reminding the seniors to stay hydrated by encouraging them to drink plenty of water and liquids such as lemonade, sparkling water, juices, buttermilk, etc.
3. STAY COOL
Keeping the air conditioning on and keeping the temperature in the house pleasant as it helps them in keeping cool and avoiding dehydration and at the same time, keeps other heat-related illnesses at bay.
4 SKIN AND EYE CARE
With age, our seniors tend to become more photosensitive and their skin has weakened and has increased sensitivity to the sun. Getting them to wear comfortable clothing, use a sunblock, and wearing sunglasses is necessary to protect them from the ill-effects of the sun. They should also limit their outdoor activity between 10 am and 5 pm when the sun is at its peak.
5. SUPPORT SYSTEM
A support system is very important for older adults around the year and specially for those who stay alone. A support network with relatives and family members who take turns in visiting and checking in on the elders is a good way to stay in the loop. Another way forward, especially if your seniors are unable to be independent and need help due to a medical emergency, getting an attendant is a good idea for having a trained and experienced person at home caring for them.
